Glazed Harvest Loaf

For me, this is the taste of autumn and early winter. I don't know why, but it doesn't truly feel as if the seasons have changed until I've made it. I learned the recipe from my mother; I'm not sure where she learned it from. In any case, it is part of my traditional celebration of the season.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
3/4 cup canned pumpkin
1 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
walnuts, chopped fine (optional)

Glaze Ingredients:
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1-2 tablespoons heavy cream
1/4 cup walnuts (optional)

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan. Cream butter and sugar. Blend with eggs and beat well. At low speed add flower, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and pumpkin.

Stir in the chocolate chips or the mix of chocolate chips and walnuts. If you are using walnuts, reduce the amount of chocolate chips you use by the amount of walnuts you use, up to 1/2 cup of walnuts. Pour into pan, smooth top, and bake 65-75 minutes.

Make the glaze by combining the confectioners' sugar, cinnamon, cream, and walnuts. Drizzle over the cooled cake.
